My Expectations:

A mega Marvel Summer spectacular extravaganza!

The Pay Off:

All that and then some, and more, with a dash of something extra.

It has taken me a while to wrap my head around Age of Ultron. I’m not sure I’ve got it, or will entirely, but I think I’ve got a better idea where I stand in regards to it after letting it sit for a few weeks.

Too. Damned. Much.

In the naughts there were the massive trilogies? Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings made film franchises bigger than 80s capitalists’ greed could have imagined, and they could imagine a lot. This is ‘Merica, damn it! Bread and circuses! We need more.

So now the production companies are building a “universe” per franchise. Stuff that in your gaping craw, Peoria. Bigger, bigger, bigger without end. While Marvel, aka Disney, has been doing a pretty good job so far, the center can’t hold. How big is too big? Age of Ultron is starting to show the cracks from trying to cram too much into the mix.

It’s a fun film. Very much the summer blockbuster that hundred million dollars promise. Joss Whedon did an incredible job juggling so much. How do you write a movie, even at two and a half hours, with 6 main characters (all worthy of their own stories) introduce 3 more, have a well rounded villain, and have 5 (or so) cross-over characters to pass along the story? And then there is all the toys they’re gonna sell, gotta have them make an appearance. God on His Throne! It’s madness. It’s eating nachos and going diarrhea at the same time.

Joss, you are my hero. Seriously.

Sadly, the next Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War, is going to have even MORE. Ugh.

  • I don’t even know where to start.
